Caring For Your Clothes

CARING FOR YOUR CLOTHES

How To Care For Your CAMILLA AND MARC Pieces

At CAMILLA AND MARC, we design pieces to be treasured for a lifetime.
Our Garment Care Guide outlines how to care for your pieces, to enable their longevity, and ensure they have the lowest environmental impact possible.
To honour the value of each garment, and our planet, we need to think beyond the first wear. By caring for your CAMILLA AND MARC pieces responsibly, you will not only be able to enjoy your pieces for longer, but you will also be helping to reduce the impact on the environment.

SUITING

A quality, well-tailored suit is a timeless addition to your wardrobe and should last you a long time. CAMILLA AND MARC tailoring is designed with timelessness and versatility in mind, ensuring many years of wear.

Suiting Care:
  • Investing in a good suit brush and brush regularly to restore the fabric's natural sheen.
  • Spot clean your suit during the season using lukewarm water and a gentle detergent -  they do not need to be dry cleaned every week.
  • Air your suit outside (out of direct sunlight) to freshen.
  • Store on a padded hanger and in a dust bag to protect your suit when not in regular use.
  • Avoid ironing if you can and opt for steaming instead. If you do need to iron, put the iron on the lowest setting and press over a cloth.

COTTON AND NATURAL FIBRES

Cotton and other natural fabrics, such as linen and hemp, are well-loved due to their breathability and comfort. Natural fabrics improve in softness with age and with the right care will last you many years of love and wear.

Natural Fibre Care:
  • Always wash in cold water to avoid shrinkage and colour fade.
  • Turn inside out to help protect the fabric.
  • Hang or lay flat to dry and give a slight stretch when wet to get them back into shape.
  • Air dry out of direct sunlight.
  • Do not use bleach.
  • Gentle iron or steaming of natural fabrics, on reverse, will help to return to their original shape.

DENIM

Denim is hard wearing and a CAMILLA AND MARC staple. Denim improves in texture and tone with age, changing with the wearer’s form and lifestyle. Over time your favourite denim pieces will have their own unique reflection of you and the way you wear them.

Denim Care:
  • Hand washing denim inside out, using cold water.
  • Hang your denim pieces up in the sun for a few hours after washing, to air dry and refresh the surface.
  • Do not tumble dry.
  • Try hanging your jeans up in the bathroom while showering, as often the steam will help to clean and freshen them, or place them in your freezer overnight to refresh.

KNITWEAR

From refined merino staples to chunky, textural pieces; our artisanally crafted knitwear will last the test of time with the right care. Knitwear pieces made from natural fibres often do not need to be washed regularly – they can be aired due to the natural anti-bacterial properties of the fibres.

Knitwear Care:
  • Handwash to avoid shrinking.
  • Always use a special wool detergent – as the enzymes in normal detergent can degrade the natural fibres.
  • Turn your garments inside out before washing, and do not scrub.
  • Thoroughly rinse your garment and press out excess water – do not wring.
  • Place garment on a towel and gently roll and press out excess water.
  • Place in shape on a flat surface to dry.
  • Cool iron on reverse if necessary.

LEATHER

Our handcrafted leather pieces are designed with precise attention to detail and versatility in mind. As leather ages, it softens, becoming more beautiful, so it is important to take care of your leather pieces carefully to ensure longevity.

Leather Care:
  • Spot clean with a damp cloth.
  • If you have a mark on your leather piece, it can be gently rubbed with a rubber eraser to remove.
  • Invest in a good leather conditioning treatment, and use at the beginning and end of each season.
  • For suede or nubuck leather, use a soft cloth or brush to clean, moving in circular motions, and treat with a suede-protection spray before wearing.
  • If you need to iron, place the iron on the coolest setting, using no steam, and iron over heavy paper.

SYNTHETIC LEATHER

Synthetic leathers are materials that have the appearance of leather but are not made from animal skin or hide.
Synthetic leathers need to be looked after carefully, as they can stiffen, crack and degrade over time.

Synthetic  Leather Care:
  • Spot clean with a damp cloth.
  • Dust regularly with a microfibre cloth.
  • Keep out of direct sunlight to help prevent cracking.
  • Using a light baby oil on the synthetic leather can help to soften slightly.
  • Hang in a cool, ventilated place to dry.
  • Do not iron, or tumble dry, as synthetic leather will melt under the heat.

SYNTHETIC FABRICS

When looked after mindfully, synthetic fabrics are incredibly durable, and will last you a lifetime. Synthetic fabrics include materials made from virgin or recycled polyester, nylon or elastane.
It's important to remember that synthetic fabrics release microplastics when they are washed, however the good news is, that synthetic fabrics are one of the easiest and hardest wearing fabrics to wash and care for and should last you for many years of wear.

Synthetic Fabric Care:
  • Ideally, handwash when you can and air dry for the lowest environmental impact.
  • Alternatively, wash on a cool delicate cycle, using a mild detergent.
  • Keep your synthetic garments away from heat, as this can cause static in the fabric.
  • Do not bleach and do not tumble dry.
  • Use on a low iron setting if necessary.
  • Wash your synthetic fabrics inside a garment bag to help catch some of the microplastics.

JEWELLERY

Our jewellery pieces are made to be passed through generations and when cared for properly you can expect to enjoy regular wear.

Jewellery Care:
  • Avoid wearing jewellery when applying cosmetics or perfume and allow them to dry before putting back on.
  • Wipe jewellery with a soft cloth such as velvet or cotton to remove lint or dust.
  • You can clean your jewellery using a soft brush (such a soft-bristled toothbrush), a mild detergent (such as castile soap), and warm water.
  • Make sure to rinse well after in clean water and dry quickly and thoroughly.
  • Alternatively, most jewellers offer a cleaning service for your pieces for a small charge.

ACCESSORIES

When cared for, most accessories will last you for many years.

Accessories Care:
  • For Soft Accessories, including scarves, hats, and gloves, follow the instructions on the care label, to ensure the best care for your piece. Most often soft accessories can be spot cleaned and air-dried to prevent pilling and damage.
  • Other accessories such as belts, bags and footwear will often be made of leather or synthetic alternatives. Please follow these guidelines for the best care.
  • For storage, opt for cotton or linen storage bags, and make sure they are clean and dust-free before putting them away.
  • Footwear should be cleaned before storing, and placed carefully in original boxes, to protect against scuff marks and dust.
  • For leather pieces, ensure these are well-conditioned before storing to ensure the optimum quality of the leather is maintained, and keep original anti-mould sachets in bags or boxes to prevent dampness.
